Mercator Medical closes its factory in Pikutkowo

On 9th September Mercator Medical announced that it was planning to close its factory in Pikutkowo near Wloclawek. The company is a Polish manufacturer of medical gloves and distributor of disposable medical materials.
Factory for PLN 4.2m
Mercator Medical opened its plant in Pikutkowo in Q4 2017. It was managed by the subsidiary company Mercator Operao. The construction of the factory was an investment worth PLN 4.2m, The facility with a total area of over 1,000 m2 is located on 1 ha of the plot.
The factory was supposed to help in the market expansion in the field of fabric sets dedicated to hospitals. It turned out, however, that it did not withstand the competition from the Far East. Especially considering the lack of preferences of hospitals, including Polish establishments, regarding the supply of materials produced on the local market. Therefore, the company decided to phase out production and close the plant at the end of 2019.
Mercator Medical focuses on disposable gloves
According to the ISB, the entire fabric range accounts for approximately 5% of Mercator Medical’s sales. The company focuses on disposable gloves (mainly for medical applications), which account for 92% of revenues (we have also written about the gloves segment here). The company has production facilities for natural and synthetic latex gloves and sells approximately 5 billion gloves per year together with distribution activities.
It is worth mentioning that during the first seven months of 2019, the plant in Pikutkowo generated over PLN 550,000 of negative EBITDA result. In the whole of 2018, it was over PLN 1m.
