Prof. Piotr Czauderna was elected president of the Medical Research Agency (ABM). ABM is a unit established six months ago, whose aim is to contribute to the growth of innovativeness of Polish medicine, among others through financing non-commercial clinical trials.

Paediatric surgeon will head up the ABM

Prof. Dr. hab. n. med. Piotr Czauderna is a paediatric surgeon. He is the head of the clinic in the Department of Surgery and Urology of Children and Youth of the Medical University of Gdansk. He is also the coordinator of the National Healthcare Section of the Development Council.

As ABM informs, Prof. Czauderna was the president of the Polish Society of Child Surgeons between 2012 and 2014. Currently, he is a member of the Society’s main board. For two consecutive terms he was the chairman of the International Strategic Group for Children’s Liver Tumors – SIOPEL. Currently, he is also President of the European Section of Paediatric Surgery of the European Union of Medical Professionals (UEMS).

President for a maximum of two terms of office

In accordance with the Act on the Medical Research Agency, the President of the Agency is appointed by the Minister of Health by way of a competition. His term of office lasts 6 years. It should be stressed, however, that the same person may serve as President for no longer than two consecutive terms.

The law establishing the Medical Research Agency was signed by the President in March this year. The main objective of ABM is to improve the innovativeness of the Polish economy. The Agency has already announced the first competition for non-commercial clinical trials, which we have written about here.

Until now, Radoslaw Sierpinski was the acting president of ABM.
