The new list of reimbursed medicines for the first time includes drugs for pregnant women. According to the Ministry of Health, since 1 September 2020, every woman who is expecting a child has been granted access to these drugs free of charge.
Financial relief for pregnant women
The Ministry of Health has published the first list of drugs that are available free of charge for pregnant women with a “C” label since September 2020. The list includes the drugs most commonly used by pregnant women. A total of 114 prescription products based on seven active substances, including drugs containing dalteparin, enoxaparin, insulin, levothyroxin, metoprolol, hyperparin or progesterone, are reimbursed. The Ministry of Health also announced its intention to supplement the list with new drugs.
The list is a supplement to the Pregnancy+ program, which has been theoretically introduced since July 2020 as part of the amendment to the law on public funded healthcare services. Unfortunately, pregnant women had to pay for drugs out of their own pocket until September. They were not allowed to carry out prescriptions for “C” drugs, due to the lack of a list of reimbursed drugs they were entitled to.
Prescription for “C” drugs
According to the guidelines of the Ministry of Health, free drugs are available to women from the moment a pregnancy is confirmed by a doctor holding the title of a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology or a doctor in the course of specialization in this field, or a midwife of primary healthcare, or a midwife providing outpatient specialist care in an obstetrics and gynaecology clinic. Drugs are available to pregnant women until the end of pregnancy, but no longer than 15 days after the planned date of birth.
A prescription for reimbursed drugs from group “C” may be issued by a doctor or a midwife with a contract with the National Health Fund (NFZ). Additionally, on the basis of a certificate issued by the doctor or midwife who confirmed pregnancy, a prescription for free drugs for a pregnant woman may also be issued by another doctor with a contract with the fund.
