Between 2001 and 2017, the number of hospital beds in Slovakia fell by 9 900 to 32 000, according to data from the National Health Information Centre (NHIC). The largest decrease in the number of beds took place until 2012. Later the decrease slowed down, and in 2016-2017 even a slight increase (by 314 and 259 beds respectively) was recorded. In 2017, the largest number of beds in Slovak hospitals were in the departments of internal medicine (11%), psychiatry (11%), gynaecology and obstetrics (8%) and surgery (8%). The average length of hospital stay also decreased in the analysed period, to 7.7 days in 2017. (decrease by 2.3 days since 2001).
