The report on the health prophylaxis of Poles carried out on behalf of the Medicover Hospital brings alarming data on modern men. Every fourth of them thinks that prophylactic tests are unnecessary. One in ten does not perform such tests at all.
A man only goes to the doctor when he has to
Women visit doctors and perform check-ups more often than men. This is also confirmed by the results of a report carried out for Medicover. It shows that as many as 61% of women have visited a specialist doctor in the last three months. Men who visited the doctor during this period were almost half as many (35%). In the last twelve months, 75% of women and 65% of men visited the doctor at least once.
It’s harder to get men to see a doctor than women. Most often they are forced to do so by emergency situations and threats to health or even life, such as hypertension, acute stomach pains or pain in the sternum area. In total, only slightly more than one third of them do the tests once every six months. At the same time, every tenth takes routine tests every two years, but over 20% – less frequently than every 24 months. About 10% of men neglect prevention at all.
Men are afraid of heart attack and obesity
Men are most concerned about cardiovascular diseases: myocardial infarction (29%) and hypertension (27%). However, the theory does not go hand in hand with practice. During the last year the cardiologist was visited by only one in four respondents. One in five men is afraid of obesity, but only one in ten has visited a doctor in the last year. It cannot be otherwise, since men are not aware which doctor specializes in treating obesity. The term bariatrister is only known to 16% of them (compared to 28% of women). The urologist was visited by 13% of men in the last year.
In general, patients do not perform prophylactic examinations mainly due to too many queues in the clinics, lack of referral or lack of time. At the same time, more than 40% of the men surveyed admitted that they would have decided to have the tests if it had been possible to perform them in a short time.
