The team that will develop solutions for rare diseases and the National Plan for Rare Diseases was established in the Ministry of Health. Deputy Minister of Health Zbigniew J. Król will lead the project. The expert group will present the strategy to the Minister of Health by the end of February 2019.

Work on the plan has been going on for 8 years, but now the Ministry announces that it will accelerate the work. Earlier, it had promised to approve the plan by the end of 2018.

In Poland, 2-2.5 million people suffer from rare diseases. It is worth noting that in this category about 8 thousand diseases are classified.

The National Plan for Rare Diseases provides for the establishment of reference centres for the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients.

In the Polish system, about 30 orphan drugs used to treat rare diseases are reimbursed, although there are about 200 in total.
