According to a report by PMR and Upper Finance Group, the COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the surgical robotics market. In the first weeks of March there was a decrease in the average number of procedures performed by about 50% globally. Overall, however, according to the data presented in this report, the dynamics of new installations on the Polish market will be very impressive in 2020, despite the prevailing coronavirus pandemic.

The market will exceed PLN 566m in 2025

Compared to the first quarter of 2019, the first quarter of 2020 saw a 51% increase in the number of procedures performed. This increase could have been much higher if it had not been for the pandemic that affected the dynamics of some centres. It is worth pointing out, however, that despite these obstacles, our estimates show that 2020 will end with an extremely dynamic growth.

According to forecasts which we have prepared, the surgical robotics market in Poland will grow between 2020 and 2025 from PLN 166m to almost PLN 570m, which means that the average annual growth in value (CAGR) of this segment will be as much as 28%. This value includes not only the total amount of sales of robots – additionally, the purchase of instruments and disposable materials needed to perform the procedure, services, as well as the value of medical services themselves are included.

For the purposes of this report, in September and October 2019 and August 2020, PMR’s research department conducted a survey among healthcare facilities with authorised da Vinci surgical systems in Poland. These were in-depth telephone interviews.

Competitive systems for da Vinci on the world market

As our respondents indicate, surgical robotics is a technology that has been widely used worldwide for two decades. Polish solutions are an implementation of these solutions, however, it is worth noting that many of the applications are used on the Polish ground in a marginal number compared to Western countries. At the same time, this means that due to low market saturation, we can expect high dynamics of this market in Poland in the coming years.

The market of medical robotics is increasingly competitive. Pioneers such as Intuitive Surgical – producer of da Vinci robot, observe increased pressure from competitors. In recent years Johnson & Johnson and Medtronic have made large investments in mergers and acquisitions to enter this promising market. In general surgery, J&J and Medtronic are working on their robot models, which will compete directly with the Intuitive robot, but da Vinci is still holding a strong position, having been a leader for 20 years. Each year Intuitive Surgical allocates huge resources to research and development. In 2019 this was $557.3m, representing 32% of total operating expenditure.
